چکیده

With a view towards studying the effect of lowering the dimensionality on excitons, we have first investigated the excitonic effects in bulk CuBr, which is a direct band-gap semiconductor with zinc blende structure. We have employed time-dependent density functional theory for this investigation. Both, the random phase approximation and the bootstrap approximation, for the exchange-correlation kernel are used. Our results show a strong signature of excitons in bulk CuBr and we expect this to be further enhanced on lowering the dimension, a work planned in near future.

Structures, electronic properties and stability phase diagrams for copper(I/II) bromide surfaces.

This study presents a comprehensive periodic slab DFT investigation into structures, electronic properties and thermodynamic stability of all plausible terminations of CuBr and CuBr2 surfaces. We first estimate lattice constants, formation and cohesive energies for the two bulk copper bromides before proceeding to analyse geometrical and electronic features of CuBr and CuBr2 configurations. Sur...

Excitonic effects in solids described by time-dependent density-functional theory.

Starting from the many-body Bethe-Salpeter equation we derive an exchange-correlation kernel f(xc) that reproduces excitonic effects in bulk materials within time-dependent density functional theory. The resulting f(xc) accounts for both self-energy corrections and the electron-hole interaction. It is static, nonlocal, and has a long-range Coulomb tail. Taking the example of bulk silicon, we sh...

Structural and Optical Study of SnO Nanoparticles Synthesized Using Microwave–Assisted Hydrothermal Route

SnO nanoparticles were synthesized using microwave–assisted hydrothermal method. It was noticed that at 300 and 600 watt microwave power, SnO formed and remained in the tetragonal phase. At 900 watt, SnO2 started appearing and a mixture of SnO and SnO2 phases coexisted. The particle size varied from ~2 to ~13 nm at 300 to 900 watt radiation power. The UV-V absorption spectra showed the excitoni...

Time-Dependent Density-Functional Theory and Excitons in Bulk and Two-Dimensional Semiconductors

In this work, we summarize the recent progress made in constructing time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) exchange-correlation (XC) kernels capable to describe excitonic effects in semiconductors and apply these kernels in two important cases: a “classic” bulk semiconductor, GaAs, with weakly-bound excitons and a novel two-dimensional material, MoS2, with very strongly-bound excitoni...

Bright and dark excitons in semiconductor carbon nanotubes: insights from electronic structure calculations.

We review electronic structure calculations of finite-length semiconducting carbon nanotubes using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and the time dependent Hartree-Fock (TD-HF) approach coupled with semi-empirical AM1 and ZINDO Hamiltonians. We specifically focus on the energy splitting, relative ordering, and localization properties of optically active (bright) and optically fo...
